How Does Therapy Work?

Therapy works by giving you the opportunity to discuss your challenges, stressors and questions in a safe and supportive space.
Therapists can help you better understand your symptoms and help develop the coping skills you need to overcome your challenges. Through therapy, you'll also improve your emotional awareness and gain insights that can change harmful attitudes or behaviors. Therapy gives you the tools to transform your thinking and achieve meaningful improvements in your mental well-being. We believe everyone can achieve mental wellness, and we're here to help make it easier with access to virtual therapy services.

It's More than Mental Health… It's Mental Wellness

Because treatment sessions are tailored to an individual's goals, they can benefit anyone who wants to work through their issues and develop new coping strategies for future challenges.
Therapy is effective for individuals, families and couples who are feeling off-balance. It's also ideal for treating specific emotional, behavioral or mental health conditions. It helps change maladaptive thinking patterns and can be used for short-term problems like grief, stress or anger. It can also address serious conditions such as depression, anxiety, or self-harm thoughts.

Therapy can also help individuals better understand and cope with significant life events, including divorce, job loss or a serious medical diagnosis. In many cases, therapy has shown to be as effective as medication and at other times, it can be combined with a medications. While it might feel emotionally uncomfortable to explore painful experiences and open up about deep-seated issues, therapy can be included as part of a comprehensive treatment plan with few risks and no physical side effects.
Some concerns commonly addressed with therapy include:
Trauma
Grief
Relationship problems
Poor communication skills
Anger management
Mental illness (depression, anxiety, etc.)
Substance abuse
Eating disorders
Conflict resolution

Types of Therapy

Sokya provides a complete range of talk therapy options from licensed and experienced clinicians.
Whether you want to take steps to improve your own mental wellness one-on-one or prefer to work with others in an online setting, our therapy sessions have something for everyone. Together, we can find the right approach for optimizing a healthier, more balanced life.

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is a collaborative therapeutic process between a trained and experienced clinician and an individual patient. At Sokya, we offer a broad range of individual therapeutic services to meet the needs of our patients. Some of the options we provide include art therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, grief therapy, insight-oriented therapy, interpersonal therapy, play therapy, supportive therapy, and much more. The therapist may employ techniques from different therapy types, depending on the situation at hand. Individual sessions are available in 55 or 85-minute blocks.

Play Therapy

Play therapy is a technique whereby the child's natural means of expression, namely play, is used as a therapeutic method to assist him or her in coping with emotional stress or trauma. Play therapy is generally employed with children aged 3 through 11. Through this method, children learn to communicate with others, express feelings, modify behaviors, develop problem-solving skills and relate to others in a variety of healthy ways.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is a great way to deal with issues in a more positive and supportive setting. Here, patients can feel less isolated in the world, knowing that there are others who feel the same as they do. Sessions are moderated and led by a highly trained professional to ensure a therapeutic and productive experience. Groups are put together with the intent to provide safe and respectful environments that help them learn, heal, and build connections with other individuals facing similar struggles. One of the most important tenets of group therapy is confidentiality, which is mutually understood and explained to all clients and staff.

Couples Therapy

The goal of couples therapy is to improve the communication between partners and learn effective problem resolution. Through effective couples counseling, partners can resolve past issues and improve their communication with one another, stop fighting about the same issues over and over again, improve sexual intimacy, agree on parenting techniques and feel more respected in the relationship. An experienced Sokya clinician acts as a mediator, provides objective feedback, and helps create a safe environment for couples to learn how to resolve conflicts in a healthy manner. Couples therapy can be beneficial to couples of all types, whether married or unmarried, heterosexual, or homosexual. Short-term counseling may last for three to five sessions, whereas long-term couples therapy may be between 12 and 24 sessions.

Getting the Most out of Therapy

Therapy is a collaborative process that relies on the mutual trust and cooperation of patients and their therapists.
People seek therapy for a number of reasons, but it can be difficult to know where to start, especially if it's your first time speaking to a licensed clinician. Fortunately, we've got your back. There are a few things you can do to get the most of out your psychotherapy sessions and ensure a productive experience, such as:
Thinking about specific treatment goals and issues to address
Making sure to find a therapist that’s the right fit

Being open and honest during treatment sessions
